The term "arm chair quarterback," or "Monday morning quarterback," have been around for many years, pertaining mainly to football games. Times have changed and today the idea of an "armchair quarterback," has taken on a whole new meaning. No longer do we sit and talk or argue about only football, but nearly every sport is recognized in the world of fantasy sports.

It began with football, the simple challenge of picking the team that was going to win, became a game of picking the best players for "your" team and who will gain you the most points in an attempt to become the best in your league. Many people now take it to the level of forming groups that challenge each other for money, holding "draft" parties where players are chosen much like they do in the real world. Salaries are managed; rankings and stats are monitored and recorded to track how their team is doing. To these players, this is serious business.

Not to be outdone, many other sports are joining the fad. Baseball teams are formed; NASCAR drivers bring in points for their fans as they challenge other "drivers." It has even expanded to golf, hockey, soccer and basketball. Each of these opportunities provides the sports fan the opportunity to become part of the big leagues, maybe live out a dream and see what they would have done in different situations when it comes to players and championships.

Do a search on Google and there are numerous websites and groups that offer fantasy sports groups. Some offer the players information like you may find if you were a manager of a team, including salary caps, player stats, team rankings and "cheat sheet" to help give a fan an advantage and the information to become the best in their league or group.

Fantasy sports has given the once "armchair quarterback" who could only talk to a TV and offer their opinion to no one in particular. Now the playing field is open, so to speak, and the ideas that were once only a dream can be played out as they become a team owner and go head to head with other owners.

To put the popularity of fantasy sports into perspective; there are an estimated 29.9 million people age 12 and older participating in the U.S. and Canada alone. Fantasy leagues are also finding their way around the world, with leagues for football (soccer here in the states), cricket and various other non-US based sports.

So, in the end, if you have the desire to be a pro player, join a fantasy league and become part of the team.
