Superbowl XXLI- The Patriots by Kelly S. Croslis
Not since 1972 has there been such a season when the Miami Dolphins went undefeated for 17 games on their way to winning the championship. The record stood - until now.
When the final whistle blew January 20, the New England Patriots had beaten the San Diego Chargers by a score of 21-12, and took their spot in the record books.
However, winning that many games in a season is not really uncommon; it's the undefeated part that draws the attention. In 1984 the San Francisco 49ers and the 1985 Chicago Bears, also won 18 games in their seasons. And the records continue - the Patriots have won a total of 14 playoff games in the last decade, tying a record held by the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys for the most playoff wins by a NFL team. Both Pittsburgh and Dallas won 14 playoff games between 1970 and 1979, New England has won 14 playoff games since the 2000 season. To add to their record breaking year, the Patriots have also become the first NFL team to win at least 17 games or more in three seasons; the 2003 and 2004 Patriots teams also reached the goal of 17 games, in addition Super Bowl XLII will mark the sixth appearance by the Patriots in the last 25 years, the highest total by any NFL team in the same time frame.
All records aside, it is football that will be the focus on February 3, when two football teams take to the field in the hopes of winning Super Bowl XLII. If we look back a few weeks, it was during the second meeting of the Patriots and Giants that brought a "scare" to the Patriots perfect seasons, when the Giants held a lead for much of the game, only to lose 38-35. On February 3, they will face one another again. The Patriots will playing for their fourth Super Bowl win, and the Giants sights set on a Super Bowl win and putting an end to the Patriots dream season.
In the end, the New England Patriots will play the game in memory of their teammate, Marquise Hill, who passed in May 2007. On their helmets will be decals with Hill's number 91, the number he wore during his three seasons with New England, including part of their Super Bowl XXXIX championship team.
