Swim
by Kelly S. Croslis

Swimming may be one of the oldest past times there is. How many summers have been spent at a local lake, pond or pool, not to mention summer vacations at the beach? Though swimming has always been seen as a fun past time, it is also one of the best forms of exercise.

For runners, training on a regular basis can be difficult in bad weather, or have injured your knee, swimming is the best medicine. Water aerobics, pool running or simple swimming gives a great workout, keeping your heart rate up and eliminates the weight on your body pounding. For those training for marathons, regular swimming builds endurance, muscle strength and cardio fitness, serving as cross-training. While swimming as a warm up can gradually increase your heart rate, preparing you for the work out ahead.

Beyond exercise, swimming has also become a great social gathering. Water aerobics and swim practice, gives you the opportunity to meet with others who share their interests, challenging each other and sharing the workout makes it more rewarding. If you go to the pool along, as you swim laps, or pool run, focus on nothing but the rhythm of your stroke. It is considered a form of meditation helping to gain a feeling of well-being, leaving you refreshed and ready for the day, or relaxed for the evening.

It seems so many things we used to see as just fun 'in the sun,' are now being seen as some of the best forms of exercise, with the advantage of people being more willing to be active.
