The World Series vs Football
by Kelly S. Croslis

Once the All-Star game is over in July, focus seems to shift to the upcoming football season, training camps begin and the questions begin as to who will do what in the coming season. The last years records are analyzed, players are traded and "new and improved teams" take to the field. The speculations, however, do not last long and soon baseball comes into the spot light. Early season records are analyzed and those teams that have made, some amazing turn around are the focus and seen as "miracle teams," since it was not expected for them to even be considered for post season play.

The past weekend was proof of the power baseball has over sports fans, as teams faced off for the coveted division championships or the even more elusive Wild Card spot, football became a distant thought. Phillies fans, who had been hoping for a playoff spot for 14 years got their wish with some saying, "football just isn't important today, it's a day for baseball." It seems football was just taking up space on the channels not covering a baseball game, or the news channels with the latest negative publicity for its players.

Over the next few weeks, baseball will continue to fill the minds of many, newspapers will cover every pitch and swing and the discussions will become heated as to who will win the World Series and more importantly if they deserved it; everyone has their own opinion.

For those who prefer football, never fear, by the end of October the focus will shift to the grid iron, the hits, the passes and the upcoming playoffs and Super Bowl. Bringing us to the conclusion that while these sporting events last for months at a time, the most watched, commented on and discussed events are the final moments.

Leading us to the question, why do we bother with the rest of it?
