The Sports Year in Review - 2007
by Kelly S. Croslis

To individually name each event that occurred over the last 12 months would take much too long and many pages. There are events; however, that stood out among the headlines and have become some of the most talked about stories.

Just in time for Christmas the football world was thankful, when their friend walked into the locker room, only 3 months after a horrific hit on the field and a diagnosis that said he would never walk again. It is a story of hope and possibility and the determination to prove everyone wrong and walk again.

If you are a basketball fan there may have been a little more disappointment in play with the antics of the New York Knicks. After they became an embarrassment, paid out a multi-million dollar lawsuit and fans had a first hand look at their player's lifestyle. Fans still go to the games, but would be happier if they saw a change in the direction their team has taken. If that was not enough, what about the story of the basketball referee's who adding gambling to their resume?

In anticipation of the 2008 summer Olympics to be held in Beijing, the U.S. and Chinese women's gymnastics teams came face to face at the world championships. This year it was the U.S. women who came out on top; previously it was the Chinese women who prevailed. With these two top teams facing each other again - it is sure to be a competition like no other.

If there was no other sports story this year, the Rutgers women's basketball team was on the tip of everyone's tongues. It took on a life of it's own as the comments and repercussions effected more than the women themselves, but radio, TV and the public alike.

It seems when glancing at the headlines that more often than not there have been problems and disappointments battling for attention among the stories of hope. Steroids played havoc with cycling and the Tour de France and blew the top off baseball with a report naming those known to have used steroids - some we never expected, giving America's favorite past time a black mark.

How do you turn a black mark into an unbelievable season? Ask the New England Patriots. Beginning the year with the accusation of spying on the New York Jets, they took their punishment, combined with complete determination to become the premier team in the league - at this writing, only one game away from a perfect season.

The stories go on; everyone has their favorite, from disappointments and controversies to amazing triumphs and resurgence in sports that may have been previously overlooked. A new age British invasion, brought professional soccer to the limelight, with the hope of a new interest in the little known sport.

What was your best sports memory of 2007?
