Short Spring Break Under $500
Let’s plan a spring break getaway for only $500. It time to get off the couch, outside and having fun.
1. Transportation – unless you are only planning to getaway yourself traveling by air is likely unaffordable, you might check Travelzoo.com airfare deals in case one of the airlines is having a sale, occasionally Spirit airlines or others will have airfare for under $75.
2. Location – Most likely you will be traveling by car, let’s plan to find a location within a tank full of gas. On average, that’s about 300 miles or 150 miles each way.
This may mean if you live where it is still not warm in March or April you may want to plan to go to a indoor waterpark or resort hotel which has indoor as well as outdoor activities.
Check for national and state parks with a lodge in your area they usually have indoor pools, and planned activities for kids. Our family’s favorite is Maumee Bay State Park in Ohio; they have lodge rooms with two double beds for about $100 a night, and 2 bedroom cottages for $194 a night. the cottage is more expensive but it includes a kitchen so you can bring yoru own food and save a bundle. There are outdoor trails, play areas, and Lake Erie. Inside activities for kids include arts and crafts, games, movies and indoor pool. Adults will enjoy the cozy areas to read book by a fireplace, lake views and walking trails.
Check for deals at indoor waterparks.
Plan a trip around an interesting place to visit with a nice hotel that has ammenities:
- Children’s Museum
- Natural Science Museum
- Presidential Home or Museum
Travel to the closes large city many offer a discount Go Card you can use to go to several local attractions.
Go camping and fishing. Many RV parks offer cabins and lodge rooms, if it too early in the season to camp outdoors. Often they are on a lake and offer small boat rentals, have play areas, and offer other activities. KOA are well known, but a quick search engine check of a geographic area and RV parks will usually find you several. What can be better than sitting around a camap fire roasting marshmallows and making s’mores?
Go to the Beach and soak up the sun and fun. You can probably find an affordable hotel a few blocks from the beach. A short walk can save you quite a lot. Search for “small hotel near _________” to find smaller hotels that usually offer a better price.
Visit a Big City; within driving distance from your home, some of our family’s favorites are Chicago, San Francisco, Kansas City, MO, St Louis, Atlanta, Boston, and Philadelphia, New York. In order to this on a $500 budget, find a hotel, which is outside the city but near public transportation, such as, a train or subway. You can spend time during the day the the city and your evenings at the hotel.
How Long? The answer is as long as your budget allows, usually 2-3 days.
Food and Eating Out – save money by eating out as little as possible. Take breakfast food along with you, a cooler with sandwiches and drinks and snacks. Have pizza, pasta, or Chinese food for dinner. If you camp you can bring all you food, and have more money for fun activities.
Gas – $75
Hotel – $250
Food – $100
Entertainment – $75
