Strengths Finder 2.0

is not the easy read you enjoy at the end of the day to wind down. Instead, it is a methodical approach to delving in your strengths and talents.

This book is an update to the 2001 “Strengths Finder,” but you can read Strengths Finder 2.0 as a standalone book and get just as much out of it as someone who is familiar with the earlier work. Although primarily targeted to the business community, I highly recommend that anyone — particularly parents with teens — work through this book a couple of times. Understand yourself, and help your older children to identify their strengths and talents early on — before they make career choices that will end up disappointing them in the long run.

The book redefines the well-worn saying that you can do anything you want, as long as you apply yourself. Instead, it cautions that no, you cannot be anything you want to be, “but you can be a lot more of who you already are.” To this end, Strengths Finder 2.0 helps the reader identify talents that — with the right amount of development — turn into actual strengths. Knowing these strengths can then be translated into decisions over what types of jobs to choose — which volunteer positions to sign up for — and how to pick complementary job partners.

Yet did you know that Strengths Finder 2.0 also applies to your personal life? If you are surrounding yourself with people who continuously seem to bring out the worst in you, the odds are good that you are not picking complementary personalities. Evaluate problem relationships with the information gleaned from the book; the odds are good that you find one or more character traits where you and the other person clash.

At the end of the book you will find your personal computer log-in to take the online test. (If you purchased the book used, make sure that the code is still in the back as a sealed tear-out.) Take the test after reviewing the book once or twice. You may be surprised to learn what Strengths Finder 2.0 reveals about you!

The next question that presents itself is clear: Now that you know your talents, what will you do to develop them?
