Extra, Extra! See All About It: New Releases for Spring 2008

By Jillian Bietz

It's hard to believe those highly anticipated big screen flicks of winter 2007 are soon to be available for rent and purchase. So relive those holiday memories with these movies featuring a few of today's biggest leading ladies. Entertain yourself during the April showers, and welcome in these new releases!

Juno
Perhaps the most quoted films of 2008; Academy Award winning Juno (both the motion picture and main character!) has captured the hearts of many. Encircling the story is Juno MacGuff, a sardonic sixteen-year-old with a love for Sunny D, blue slushies and hamburger telephones. But when Juno discovers she's pregnant with her awkward, dolphin short wearing, orange tic-tac popping best friend Paulie's baby, she doesn't falter. After selecting an eager yuppie couple to adopt her baby via their ad in the Penny Saver (a suggestion made by Juno's quirky friend, Leah, who has an affinity for balding, hairy teachers) Juno makes the best out of what most would consider a catastrophic, life-altering nine months. With the support form Leah, her repairman father, and dog loving, no nonsense step mom, Juno deals with the bumps (baby bumps that is!) along the way. With a talented cast, great soundtrack and frank wittiness, Juno is sprinkled with sentimentality, and, of course those notorious one-liners. Available April 11.

Enchanted
With subtle additions of classic Disney homage and great songs, Enchanted is a Disney devotee's dream comes true! Giselle, an animated princess from the fairytale world of Andalasia, is about to get married to her true love- Prince Edward. But when his jealous wicked stepmother, the queen, transports princess Giselle to modern day New York City, Giselle is lost, afraid and inquisitive of what she believe to be a very odd place. After wearily wandering, waiting for Prince Edward to come save her, she stumbles upon single dad and divorce lawyer Robert, who is frazzled by Giselle's idealistic beliefs of "true love's kiss"; something he doesn't believe in. Though slightly pensive of Giselle, Robert's young daughter, Morgan, is fanatical with the "real life princess". Simultaneously Giselle and Prince Edward search for one another, encountering one mishap after another. And eventually, in true Disney style, Giselle and Robert fall in love. But "happily ever after" isn't as easy as it appears! Through song, dance, comedy and romance, Enchanted teaches even the bitterest person to remember that dreams do come true! Available now.

27 Dresses
Though the absolute prototypical of a chick flick, 27 Dresses is as sweet as they come. Jane is selfless, uptight twenty-something who's dreamt of her wedding day since she was a little girl. Having been a bridesmaid at 27 weddings (resulting in a closet bursting full of ugly bridesmaid dresses!), Jane can't wait until it's her turn to walk down the aisle. In fact, she has a notebook filled with clippings, menus, invitations, and other wedding paraphernalia for her wedding day and pours over the wedding section of the Times. So when Jane finds out her little sister is engaged to her the man of her dreams (her boss who she fantasizes about marrying herself) she couldn't be more, well, crushed! Between arranging her materialistic little sister's wedding and lamenting over her "always a bridesmaid never a bride" situation, a very unlikely prospect enters Jane's life- and in a unconventional way that will change the way Jane feels about love, life, and marriage. Available April 29
