There is nothing permanent except change - Heraclitus

En Vogue in Vintage!
By Jillian Bietz

Everywhere you look, it seems like vintage fashions are overriding modern creations. Regrettably, not all of us can afford "fresh out of the 1970's archive" couture gowns, but luckily, you don't need to splurge to get some of the most coveted pieces of the season-you can score some superb finds that are the "real deal" at flea markets and second hand shops. If you are tired of sporting the same ensembles as every other kid in your school, it's a refreshing change to shop vintage. It's not likely two pieces are the same! But before you start hitting up the local Goodwill, there are a few tips you need to know to make sure that your finds are more glam than gross.

Heading to the flea market? Prepare for a long day ahead. Wear walking shoes and a simple outfit that you can easily slip clothes over. Most flea market booths and second hand stores do not have dressing rooms, so it's important you feel comfortable slipping on stuff in the aisle. It's essential to try in vintage clothing before you wear it because sizes tend to run differently depending on the era they are from.

If you see something interesting, grab it! It will be hugely disappointing when you see someone else buying the top you set aside in what you thought was a safe place. If you decide you don't like it, you can always put it back on the rack, but cute vintage deals are very popular so don't miss out!

Inspect each garment worthy of buying carefully. Check for rips, tears, stains and strong smells. A rip on the seam? Forget it unless you have mad sewing skills. After one wear, a gaping hole could surface. Yucky smells don't often come out of clothes and neither do big stains. Most sellers are careful to wash their clothing before selling, but permanent stenches won't wash out. Even if something is only five dollars, if there is a there's a glitch and it's not in mint condition, it's just not worth it.

Lastly, have fun! Just like mall shopping, vintage shopping should be an enjoyable activity people of any age will love!
