Winter Care for Skin and Hair

by Jillian Bietz

During the winter months, schedules are jam-packed. With parties and events flooding our schedules from Halloween to New Year's Eve, it's easy to forget how important it is to keep skin and hair healthy during the wintry weather. Here are some tips to keep your looking and feeling good - from head to toes!

SKIN

As the biggest organ of the body, our skin endures some tough stuff!

Although a tan might look healthy, it is not. "Forgetting" to slather yourself with sunscreen (even though you can't see it, the sun is still shining even on the coldest of days, so its still important to wear your SPF) or baking your skin at a tanning salon till it turns orange is not only a fashion faux paus, but a health hazard as well. If you can't learn to embrace a naturally pale complexion, try a sunless tanning cream of a bronzer. Not only is a fake bake easier to achieve, you can attain a natural glow without risking your life-or denting your wallet.

Snowing so soon? Oh wait, that's just your flaky skin! When the weather turns colder, moisture is decreased, and harsh winds can take a toll on your skin. Whether it is in the form of ashy, dry, or irritated skin, the lack of humidity affects lots of us. Appling a gentle lotion once a day - allover - should do the trick! Now get ready to stop itching!

Another reason your skin may be acting up? Hot showers! Though we often immerse ourselves in hot water to keep warm, a cold or lukewarm soak is much healthier. Your skin will thank you! Add some bath oil to your tub for an extra dose of moisture.

While heavy fabrics are favorites in the winter, their abrasive textures can rub you the wrong way-literally! These fabrics can bother already irritated skin, causing an occurrence of rashes. Dress in layers of cotton-like fabrics that can easily be removed once you enter indoors.

We always hear how water is essential for our bodies, but did you know it could help keep your skin moisturized? Not only does it keep up healthy, downing at least eight glasses of water a day flushes the toxins out of our bodies, leaving up less prone to get sick.

Forgo those packaged snacks and go for for some fresh fruit and veggies-especially those with a darker hue! Antioxidants and vitamins found in fruits and vegetables not only protect skin from the lack of sun, but also keep your body healthy. Whipped up in a smoothie or dunked in a dressing, fruits and veggies are important no matter what the climate.

HAIR

Dehydrated, brittle locks often surface in cold and windy weather. Try a leave-in conditioner to moisturize your suffering strands.

Though hats are all the rage this season, forgo that wool beret and opt for something that breathes. Heavier materials cause split ends and hair breakage, so select a cap made of a softer material, or even better, one lined with a lining of ribbon or fabric.

Limit your use of the hairdryer! It only dries out your tresses, leaving them vulnerable to breakage. Though air-drying is much better, if you must blow dry, put it on the "cool" setting and use a heat protection serum.

If your hair appears as if you rubbed a balloon over it, you are probably suffering from some extra static! Wearing hats and scarves are often the cause. For a provisional fix, run a dryer sheet over your hair-it should help you look more presentable in no time!

The lack of sunlight often darkens flaxen hair. To attain your light locks, treat your tresses to a color-enhancing shampoo.

Washing your hair everyday strips it of natural oils, leaving you prone to a weaker mane. To prevent this, shampoo your locks every other day, and condition only the ends.

As you can see, it's a must to take care of yourself. Hopefully, these guidelines will keep you vigorous and protected, because there is nothing more beautiful than health!
