The Family Sabbatical Handbook:The Budget Guide to Living Abroad with Your Family
by Elisa Bernick
Families Online Radio Interview with the Author

live abroad costThis book is a how-to guide for parents who would like to live abroad with their children, experience another culture and learn another language. And she should know: Bernick and her husband, Michael, and kids Cleome and Asher did just that, living in Mexico for 18 months, without working during their sabbatical, on three years’ savings and the rent from their home back in Minnesota.

Please take a moment to read the attached press release. As a how-to guide for parents who would like to live abroad with their children, experience another culture and learn another language, The Family Sabbatical Handbook is indispensable.

Elisa Bernick was recently interviewed by AP Travel Editor Beth Harpaz, in a recent piece on traveling abroad with children. We're excited that this interview has been picked up in local papers across the USA and Canada, in markets from St. Louis to Bermuda --including a recent story filed by USA Today.

At first glance, the book is a must-have for any parent who deems to undertake this kind of extended adventure. A second glance reveals The Family Sabbatical Handbook a fun, useful read for any parent who dreams of traveling en famille for any length of time. Bernick’s invaluable travel tips deal with every imaginable aspect of family vacationing--from budgeting, accommodations, safety and security, packing, education, language /culture differences and the daily challenges of living away from home.

Elisa Bernick spent the first 12 years of her life lying on a hill in her suburban Minnesota backyard staring up at the sky wondering what life was like outside her tiny spot on the globe. She has spent the next 35 years doing her best to find out. At 17, she headed off to travel around the world and worked with fire-eaters in Paris, innoculated turkeys on a kibbutz in Israel, fed truckers on a boat to Greece, rode the Magic Bus to London, and sold camping supplies in Edinburgh. During college in Madison, Wisconsin, she sat down on a bench next to a 23-year old man named Michael. He had a long blond ponytail, a quick smile, and excellent traveling stories of his own. They decided to try some adventures together (including having a couple of kids) and have been traveling together ever since.

Elisa is an award-winning writer and journalist. During her 25-year career, she has worked as a reporter and producer for radio, broadcast television, and cable stations that include Minnesota Public Radio, PBS, WCCO-TV, and Twin Cities Public Television. Her freelance magazine articles on travel and parenting have been published by Parents Magazine, Minnesota Parent, and Transitions Abroad. She is the author of Cyberos, a romantic thriller set in the mysterious world of virtual reality and Exit Strategies, which traces the adventures of a Jewish family that moves to the Protestant Midwestern suburbs in the 1960s and '70s.

Elisa has taught creative and broadcast writing at Syracuse University, the University of Minnesota, and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. She is an avid gardner and lives with her husband and two children in St. Paul, Minnesota. Here's the link to Elisa's website:http://www.intrepidtraveler.com/fsh.html
