Magnetic Weight Loss -- Does It Work?
Magnetic weight loss is the newest fad diet supplement to hit the net. What is it and how does it work. Oh, and of course, does it work?
Magnetic Weight Loss--What is it and How does it work?
Magnets are believed to carry an inherent ability to hypnotize, in a sense, or even physically change our cellular physiology, even causing us to lose weight.
At a cellular level it's argued that bio-magnetism works by increasing cellular respiration, which is the process of breaking down macronutrients, like carbohydrates and fat, into useable forms of energy. The greater the rate of cellular respiration the greater the rate of calorie consumption.
Caloric consumption results in a negative energy balance and weight loss. Here is a quick summary of how bio-magnetism is proposed to work:Magnet appliedStimulation of cellular respirationsCalories in the form of carbohydrates and fat are burnedNegative energy balance occursWeight loss
Supporters of magnetic weight loss also claim that bio-magnetism results in a reactivation of body function and metabolism. I am not clear of the scientific meaning behind this claim.
Some also claim that bio-magnetism allows your body to transform the food you absorb into a powerful combustion that burns away the excess fat permanently. This reduction of your fat cells all over your body will continue even at nighttimes when you are fast asleep.
Bio-magnetism has already been used by people throughout the world. Unfortunately, many of the websites that make this claim state that they cannot release the names of people who have tried this new weight loss method. I have no idea why they can't release the names.
There is no evidence in support of the last claims listed. However, one study did study the cellular response to bio-magnetism.
Magnetic Weight Loss -- Does it Work?
This is the abstract from the study conducted by the Department of Community Health at the University of Oregon. It was published by the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, Vol 13, Issue 3 243-250, Copyright © 1994 by American College of Nutrition
The use of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to monitor cellular bioenergetics during weight loss may provide novel insights regarding metabolic functioning.
METHODS: Changes were noted in 18 sedentary, moderately overweight women following a 7-week program consisting of a low-fat, 422-428 MJ/day (1010-1025 kcal/day) diet, a progressive walking program, a vitamin-mineral-fortified, isolated-protein meal supplement drink and a weekly group meeting.
Mitochondrial energy production and utilization were assessed by measuring the concentrations of inorganic phosphate (Pi) and phosphocreatine (PCr) through magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
CONCLUSIONS: Only mild changes in cellular respiration were noted. The best weight loss plan does not have to include bio-magnetism. The possible metabolic advantages associated with a program that employs moderate energy restriction (reduced caloric intake) and a regular aerobic exercise program produces by far the best results.
If you haven't already guessed, I agree with the final conclusion. As a matter of fact, the conclusion made by the author follows the rules of healthy weight loss. There is no magic to it, just simple calorie restriction with exercise. No surprise here.

A Simple Plan for Weight Loss that Really Works
One pound of fat equals 3500 calories. Want to lose a pound a week? Then you need to consume 3500 calories less per week than you use. That's about 500 calories a day. By cutting out 500 calories a day from your normal daily diet, while keeping your activity level the same, you can lose approximately one pound a week.
Weight Loss Information -- Setting Effective Goals
Weight loss information is often confusing and misleading. The more specific we are in discussing weight loss information the better it is for everyone. Here's an example...realistic goals. What are realistic goals? I wrote an article not to long ago that defined "realistic" as a 5-10% reduction of your total body weight. The 5-10% reduction is all the weight you need to lose to show a health benefit or improvement.

Negative Calorie Foods FAQs
What is negative calorie effect?
Whatever food we eat, our body has to work hard to digest and absorb. There are certain foods that require more calories to digest than their own calories. The overall effect of these foods in our body is that of using calories from body in the process of digestion.
How To Find Your Ideal Body Weight
A calorie is the unit used to measure the energy value of food and the energy used by the body to maintain normal functions. When the calories from food intake equal the calories of energy the body uses, weight remains constant. But when more calories are eaten than the body needs, the body stores those additional calories as fat, causing subsequent weight gain. One pound (1 lb) of fat represents about 3,500 excess calories.

Are You Controlled by the Urge to Splurge
I gotta confess: I'm completely addicted to crisps. Any kind is fine. Don't mind the flavor - they all taste fine. My resolve weakens every time I think about chomping into one. Feeling the crunch, hearing the crackle, and getting that first taste of its tangy flavor. Bliss - and if you are into crisps then you probably wish you had a packet right now - probably a big one.

How to Do the Atkins Diet Right?
Let me tell you something - if you are doing the Atkins Diet, you might be doing it WRONG. I have been on diet forums for years, have consulted thousands of people on low carb diets, and I am seeing it again and again. People don't know how to implement a low carb diet. Very often people fail to lose weight or to adapt to the low carb life style. Many people give it up after a couple of days because they don't know how to do it right. The Atkins Diet is the most famous low carb diet, but it is full of pitfalls just waiting for you to walk into.
So you ask, "How do I determine if I am Obese, Overweight or fat?" Usually 20% or more over recommendations on standard weight charts indicates that you fit into the obese category. Obesity refers specifically to having an abnormally high proportion of body fat.
