Make Children’s Bunny and Chick Hand Puppets

You Need:

    • Felt (bunny: 2 sheets white, scraps of pink and black) (chick: 2 sheets yellow, scraps of white, orange and black)
    • Glue, Scissors, straight pins we recommend tacky glue or hot glue (for adults only)

Easter Crafts Kids: Easter Hat

Click here for the printable pattern for Bunny | Chick
Will open in new window.

Directions:

Bunny:

Print out body pattern of the bunny. Place 2 sheets of white felt for body one on top of the other and place pattern piece on top. Using straight pins, pin pattern to sheets of felt (pins must go through both sheets and all pieces must lay fairly flat once pinned) Cut along pattern edge to form body pieces. In addition, cut out the following pieces:

black – two 1/2″ circles for pupils

white – four 1″ circles for cheeks and eyes, one 3/4 x 1/2″ rectangle for teeth (also cut a small slit for teeth gap).

pink – one 1/2″ oval for the nose, two 1-3/4″ x 5/8″ ovals for insides of ears; two 3/4″ circles and six 5/16″ circles for paws

Run a bead of tacky or hot glue along edge of one entire bunny body piece except for bottom edge. Place second bunny body piece on top and press gently to adhere. Glue all other pieces onto bunny’s body and let dry.

Chick:

Print out the pattern of chick, includes body, beak and feet. Place 2 sheets of yellow felt for body one on top of the other and place pattern piece on top. Using straight pins, pin pattern to sheets of felt (pins must go through both sheets and all pieces must lay fairly flat once pinned) Cut along pattern edge to form body pieces. Follow the same procedure for the feet and beak on one layer of orange felt. In addition, cut out the following pieces:

black – two 1/2″ circles for pupils

white – two 1″ circles for eyes

Run a bead of tacky or hot glue along the edge of one entire chick body piece except for bottom edge. Place second chick body piece on top and press gently to adhere. Glue all other pieces onto chick’s body and let dry.

These puppets are made to fit children’s hands, not adults. To make an adult size print patterns out at 150-175%. You will also need to cut the bunny’s ears out separately because with the adult size the body and ears won’t all fit on the same felt sheet. Glue ears between body pieces when assembling.

Meeting the Easter Bunny Poem

On Easter morn at early dawn
before the cocks were crowing
I met a bob-tail bunnykin
and asked where he was going.
“Tis in the house and out the house
a-tispy, tipsy-toeing,
Tis round the house and ’bout the house
a-lighlty I am going.”
“But what is that of every hue
you carry in your basket?”
“Tis eggs of gold and eggs of blue;
I wonder that you ask it.

“Tis chocolate eggs and bonbon eggs
and eggs of red and gray,
For every child in every house
on bonny Easter day.”
He perked his ears and winked his eye
and twitched his little nose;
He shook his tail — what tail he had —
and stood up on his toes.
“I must be gone before the sun;
the east is growing gray;
Tis almost time for bells to chime.” —
So he hippety-hopped away.

Talking to Your Child About the Easter Bunny Common Sense Parenting.

Easter BunnyTalking to your Child about the Easter Bunny

In our last poll, “Talking to your Child about the Easter Bunny“, we took a look at one of the somewhat tricky roads of parenthood to traverse – your child is not a little tot anymore who should believe in the Easter Bunny (Santa Claus, or the Tooth Fairy) yet you either do not have the heart to tell her or him that it is just a made up game, or you lack the gumption to do so.

You have thought about the question of what to you and you have voted:

1. 42.9 percent of you have stated that you simply don’t know what to do and will most likely procrastinate a course of action until next year.

2. 35.7 percent stated that you will sit down with your child and break it to them that the whole bunny affair is a game that adults like to play for children.

3. 14.3 percent indicated that you will stop the bunny tradition cold turkey with little byways of preparation or explanation.

4. 7.1 percent just weren’t able to face the music themselves and will leave this talk up to a family friend or relative.

Here are some tips on dealing with this milestone in the parent-child relationship that many wish would never arrive.

  • Understand that you will not be able to keep on playing the bunny game forever, and it is best to pick a point in time that the child is still young and willing to accept the change in routine at face value yet not old enough to have been mocked by classmates or friends for still believing in the bunny.
  • It is best for you to be the one to discuss the issue with your child, simply because as a parent, the buck stops with you.
  • While it may be a big change for the child, it is best not to make a big deal about the issue. In other words, do not signal your child how terrible you feel, because if you do your child will most pick up on the mood and proceed to really feel terrible – simply because you are anticipating it!
  • Probably the easiest way to deal with the change in routine is to explain that it is time for the “bunny game” again this year and now that your child is so big, she or he can participate. Rather than having a long drawn out talk, let the child in on the “big secret” and allow her or him to play the game with the adults, perhaps for a younger sibling, or simply for the fun of it.
