Coping with Tragedy

Whether we have family and loved ones in the Newtown community or whether we just engaged through devastating images brought to us by the media, we are all trying to make sense of what has happened during and in the aftermath of Sandy Hook Elem. Of course none of us are affected the way those community members were.
An event such as this creates a tremendous amount of stress, anxiety, and emotional and physical exhaustion for those both directly and indirectly affected. In the days and weeks to come, we may begin having some of these common reactions:
- Disbelief and shock
- Fear and anxiety about the future
- Apathy and emotional numbness
- Nightmares and reoccurring thoughts about the event
- Irritability and anger
- Feeling powerless
- Excessive crying
- Changes in eating pattern, loss of appetite or overeating
- Increased use of alcohol and drugs
- Difficulty sleeping or falling asleep
Tips for coping
It’s normal to have difficulty managing our feelings fter a major traumatic event. Because everyone experiences stress differently, don’t compare our progress with others around us or judge other people’s reactions and emotions. Here are some tips for coping with stress:
Talk about it. By talking with others about the event, we can relieve stress and realize that others share our experience and feelings.
Spend time with friends and family. This can help us through this tough time.
Take care of ourselves. Get as much rest and exercise as possible, and eat properly.
Take one thing at a time. Pick one urgent task and work on it. Once we accomplish that task, choose the next one.
Avoid drugs and excessive drinking. Drugs and alcohol may seem to help us feel better, but in the long run they generally create additional problems that compound the stress we are already feeling.
Ask for help. If we are at the beginning of the healing process and our life is full of painful emotions, memories or crisis, the idea of healing over time may seem irrelevant. We may feel terrible now and we want to feel better. We may feel desperate and want (demand) answers, and most importantly, we just want the pain to go away. Unfortunately, there are no easy answers. Healing does take time. We don’t just zip through it. Strong feelings will arise as we work through the grief stages of denial, anger, depression, bargaining, until finally we come to an acceptance that life goes on post-tragedy. There is no magical timetable for healing.
Grieving is a natural part of the healing process. As we shed tears and weave in and out of the stages of grief, we are progressively moving on. A person does not simply “get over” a trauma or tragedy. However, through grieving, it is possible to steadily move toward more inner peace, acceptance and forgiveness.
