Poem: A Day Well Spent

Reach out and take my hand,
come and walk with me a while.
Follow your eyes- take notice
of the things that go unlooked.
Smell the wild flowers, run your
fingers across the Bluebonnets
as they sway in the warm air.
We’ll go up yonder on the hill
and pick blackberries off the vine.
Let’s pick them all and make
Blackberry wine- so divine.
Listen to the silence of the day,
and the occasional singing bird.
The red dirt warm on our bare
feet as we dodge the rocks that
await in our path, jumping on to
the cool grass then back on to
the warm red dirt again.
White shapely clouds drift in the
blue sky as we lie on our backs
pointing out animals and other
creations found way up high,
eventually napping on the
curvy land lushly green. The
afternoon slowly ticks by
peacefully and still as we get
lost in our own dreams for a
while- just a short while.
Till the dogs playfully pounce
on our relaxed slumber.
Let’s walk out to the pond and
get our feet wet, we’ll wade in
the muddy red water to cool off-
at least until the cattle come through.
The day wears on as the once high
set sun slowly begins its plummet
and the wind cools. We’ll walk back
up the hill and pick up our basket
of blackberries along the way, maybe
even eat a few. It’s the perfect time
of evening to go into the gardens
and pick the peapods, we’ll pick a
bushel full and leave the rest for
later. As our feet are tired and legs
are getting weary, the swing looks
like heaven. Let’s go sit on the
swing and shell our peas as we
rock from front to back and talk of
precious memories. The dogs play
fiestly and chase each other around.
The chickens cluck in a constant
rhythm pecking the seeds off the
ground. The light of the day is
fading, and our peas are finally
shelled. Inside we’ll wash them
up and cook some for dinner- the
rest will go in the freezer. I’ll put
some fresh coffee on to brew
while we get our showers.
Then we’ll meet at the game table
and drink a cup of coffee or two…
