Expressive Borders Add Meaning to Your Home
By Sonya Weiss – Interior Decorating
Personal expression is everywhere. You only have to look at the different ways people dress or wear their hair to realize that within each of us lies the flair to be unique.
Yet, when it comes to home decor, many of us opt to play it safe, to stick to neutral colors, themes and furniture.
It could be that we’re afraid of standing out too much or it could be that we’re afraid in our desire to express our inner flair that we’ll make a decorating mistake.
But life is too short to let dull dictate how you what you dress in, how you wear your hair or how you decorate your home.
Don’t be afraid to express yourself in every room of your home.
One teenager, who loves music and plans a career in the music industry, decided to decorate her bedroom walls in a way that showed off her uniqueness and her love of music. She decided to use lines from her favorite songs.
When she was done, the decorating effort created a border effect. You can achieve the same look in any room. Start by using a yardstick to measure off even lines on every wall in the room so that you won’t have some words going up while others slant downward.
Write out the words or lyrics that have special meaning to you in pencil first.
Take care to leave two fingers of space between each sentence or word.
Once you have the words written, carefully trace over the pencil using whatever color paint you’ve chosen.
Allow all of the words to completely dry.
When they’re done, go back to the finger spaces and freehand (or stencil) music notes or hearts or whatever symbol you want to use that has meaning for you.
From the time she was a child, Sonya spun stories to entertain herself and her siblings. Once she graduated from high school, she put her writing aside and attended college where she studied Secondary Education, majoring in English. She's represented by literary agent Nicole Resciniti.
