Home Decorating: A Focal Point for Your Room by Sonya Weiss
A Focal Point for Your Room
by Sonya Weiss
The purpose in creating a focal point is to make a room inviting while at the same time retaining your decorating flair. What exactly is a focal point? A focal point is the place where your eyes are drawn when entering a room. In many homes, the focal point is the largest item in the room but you have to know how to use the item to the room’s advantage.
A focal point can be a fireplace, an oversized picture, a colorful piece of furniture, a wall painted an eye catching color, a sculpture or old quilts artfully hung on the wall. To figure out what your focal point is, walk into a room and see what draws your attention and build on that point.
If you have a fireplace one of the easiest ways to make it a focal point is to accessorize it. Dress it up, but with simplistic decorations so you keep the focus on the fireplace. If you like the country style, use a plain swag of green ivy or other natural plant on top of the top of the mantel. Don’t overpower the fireplace with a large or busy screen. One of the biggest mistakes people make when trying to create a focal point is to add too much clutter. Clutter makes the area look crowded and fussy.
You don’t want your fireplace to blend in with the wall. If your mantel and surround match your wall, then you need to either change them out or paint them. For added zest, give the wall behind the fireplace a different color than the rest of the room.
