Christmas Decorations for Mantel and Fireplace
The mantle and hearth areas of your fireplace are excellent areas to decorate for Christmas. These areas are often a focal point within a room, so decorating these areas can really add a lot of style. Of course, the hearth is also the place that Santa Claus will pay most attention to, so you want to spruce the area up so that he feels welcome as well.
Set Out the Welcome Mat for Santa –
If you have children in your home, one fun way of decorating the fireplace hearth is to really roll out the welcome mat for Santa. Using a holiday welcome mat in front of your fireplace can be a fun touch.
A small stool with a plate and cup makes a cute decoration, to which cookies and milk can be added on Christmas Eve so that Santa can have a snack before placing the presents under the tree. If you don’t actually use your fireplace, a fun decoration can be a large pillow placed inside the fireplace, so that Santa has a soft landing. A “Welcome Santa” sign, either purchased or handmade, can add the finishing touch.
Decorate with Nature
Another effective way of decorating the hearth area of your home is by using natural materials. A basket of pine cones or a vase of evergreen boughs can look beautiful to either side of the fireplace opening. Even bare tree branches can look great, either in a vase, arranged in baskets, or tied in bundles using decorative ribbons and bows. An arrangement of poinsettia plants is also a great way of decorating the hearth area with nature in a very colorful and eye-catching fashion. A small potted evergreen tree, decorated for the holidays, can also be a nice addition to this area.
Functional Hearth Decorations
One style of decorating the hearth that can give a very homey and comfortable appearance is using functional items to decorate for the holidays. A basket containing a folded comforter and a book of Christmas stories can be both decorative as well as inviting for an evening of reading by the fire. You can also create a welcoming look by keeping a basket of mugs and a decorative canister of hot cocoa mix nearby, or a pretty bowl with a canister of popcorn seeds. Adding a tapestry throw or comforter to a nearby chair is also a nice touch.
Extending your Mantle Decorations to the Hearth
Another effective way of decorating the hearth is to simply extend the decorations that you have on the mantle down to the hearth area. For example, if you have an arrangement of Christmas ornaments on the mantle, add a basket of ornaments to one or both sides of the fireplace on the hearth. If you have a small village display on the mantle, find a house or two in a larger scale, and place those on the hearth.
Hearth Decorating Safety
As with all types of decorating, you should always consider safety. If you use your fireplace for actual fires, always make sure to keep any decorations a safe distance from the fireplace, or simply move them as necessary. Never leave flammable decorations in close proximity when using your fireplace.
