Book Review: Created to Be His Help Meet: Discover How God Can Make Your Marriage Glorious
Created to Be His Help Meet is penned by Debi Pearl. Having been married for more than 34 years and raising five children, she knows a thing or two about how to be married. A product of the Hippie movement and since her teens a ‘Jesus freak,’ she is also firmly grounded in Scripture.
The reader who expects Created to Be His Help Meet to be another tepid book on marriage — full of benign advice to pray for an errant husband and exhortation to find supportive women for personal support – is sure to be disappointed. In fact, this book will challenge any woman’s inner feminist faster than she can pay off the credit card with which she paid for it.
Created to Be His Help Meet embodies what happens when the spiritual rubber meets the worldly road: sparks fly, the book hits the wall a few times and the reader either loves or hates what she reads. The book talks of submission, taking responsibility for a lousy marriage and – whether he changes or not – becoming a wife of godly character. Debi Pearl challenges any wife who has a million excuses to not treat her husband as ‘head’ to square the stance with scripture.
Not surprisingly, there are sharp battle lines drawn of readers who absolutely adore Created to Be His Help Meet and those who abhor it as setting back the accomplishments of women. After all, she tackles issues such as obedience to a husband, chastity, modesty and even attitude. Where will you be found? Pick up the book and find out. Whether you agree or disagree with Mrs. Pearl, it will not leave you unchanged.
