Decorating Your Home for the Holidays
Decorating your home for the holidays is a tradition for many families that adds to their enjoyment of the holiday season. Most people feel like their home is more cozy and attractive when it is dressed up in its holiday best. There are many different ways you can decorate your home for the holidays. Some people love lots of glitter, tinsel and sparkle, while others prefer a more subdued and natural approach. Whichever method you prefer is completely up to you and your family.
The Natural Look
If you prefer a more natural approach, you might find everything you need just by taking a walk in the woods or around your yard. A large basket of pine cones, especially if it is festooned with a colorful holiday ribbon, is hard to beat as far as an attractive holiday focal point within a room. If you have access to pine trees, you can use pine boughs very effectively in your holiday home decor, either on the mantle or over banisters and railings. When using natural materials such as pine branches, you do need to keep in mind that they are flammable, so make sure to locate them a safe distance from the fire within the fireplace, or from other types of heating elements.
Holly Branches and Cinnamon Sticks
You can also add a natural holiday decor to your home by using items such as holly branches purchased from a florist, perhaps arranged in a glass vase along with some pine branches. Smaller natural decorations could include cinnamon sticks tied together with red ribbon, or a pinecone wreath hung on the front door or over the fireplace.
Candles are another classic way of decorating a room for the holidays. There are so many beautiful candles available, in such luscious scents, that you will have no problem choosing some candles to add to your holiday room decor.
A Family Affair
If you have small children in the home, it can be a lot of fun to let them help with the holiday home decorations. Depending on their age, there are many projects that are easy for kids to do that create a lot of holiday decorating impact. A timeless classic decorating technique is a paper chain. These can be a lot of fun for kids to make, and they are an easy and inexpensive craft project. A popular choice is using red and green construction paper, but if you have some heavyweight colorful holiday wrapping paper, or metallic or glittery paper, these make excellent choices as well. There are many ways you can decorate with a holiday paper chain. They are attractive when draped down a banister, can look nice looped around the top edge of the room, or of course you can use it instead of garland on the Christmas tree.
Another fun holiday craft that is easy for kids to make is a popcorn garland. This makes a wonderful family holiday decorating project, because everybody can share in the fun. Many people like to make these types of decorations for their tree, or to use as an outdoor decoration that doubles as a way to feed the birds and other outdoor critters during the cold winter months.
