If you live near a bookstore, give them a call and ask if they have any children’s events schedule for the summer. I recently attended a wonderful book launch event at our local independent bookstore. A book launch is the celebration of a newly published book. The author typically does a reading and discussion or activity about the book. Books are available for purchase and the author will sign copies. However, it is not necessary to purchase a book to attend a book launch. Book launches and other events can be a great way to introduce your children to local book authors and newly published books. The event I attended featured several wonderful authors representing a wide array of books I thought would be make a great list for summer reading. I’m sure there will be a book on this list for everyone in your family.
Family Lullaby by Jody Fickes Shapiro, illustrated by Cathie Felstead. The gentle rhythm of this soothing bedtime book will become a favorite in your collection. The inclusion of all family members will give little ones a sense of belonging. Your own family members can be included if you choose to personalize your reading. The folksy illustrations will appeal to all ages.
The Secret Life of Walter Kitty by Barbara Jean Hicks, illustrated by Dan Santat is the perfect picture book for cat lovers. Walter Kitty may seem like an everyday pet, but he is really “Fang,” a Superhero. If you ever wonder what your cat is really up to, Walter Kitty is sure to have you grinning from ear to ear!
With humorous text, The Melvin Beederman Superhero series by Greg Trine (Rhode Montijo, Illustrator) provides even the most reluctant reader with a frolicking good time. Melvin is a human hero kids will love. His super powers are not perfected, but he and his sidekick Candace fight the likes of the McNasty brothers. There are currently four books in the series, with more on the way.
In the novel, Theodosia and the Serpents of Chaos, author R.L. La Fevers has given girls a new hero! Set in London in the early 1900’s, Theo senses the magic in the artifacts her mother has brought from Egypt. As she explores further, Theo becomes involved with a tangled plot that is sure to pull in readers fascinated by archeology and adventure. With “edge of your seat” excitement, this is a great book to read with your kids, too.
