Lititz

by Kellie Strausser

Lititz, PAMy small town of Lititz, Pa has been hopping in the past several weeks. I have lived in Lititz, Pennsylvania for the past 15 years (with a small detour into the neighboring town of East Petersburg for four years when I bought my first house), but overall it has been the sleepy, artsy, homemade Wilbur chocolate and Sturgis Pretzel town of Lititz that won my heart.

It is a close-knit, family-oriented town where many know many, and friendliness abounds. The Main street of Lititz is lined with quaint craft and antique shops, and every year there is a Halloween parade complete with hot dogs, sauerkraut and warmed Apple Cider. The town is surrounded by vast stretches of beautiful farmland, and on the fourth of July, not a blade of grass can be seen due to the manifold of people who camp out to watch the annual Fireworks display. This is the town I want to keep.

The town I don’t want is the one that has been appearing in the Local and National Newspapers recently due to some horrific disturbances in the peace and tranquility that was trying it’s best to hold on despite a steadily slipping grip.

Tuesday, November 8th, a Lititz police officer by the name of Jevon Miller was shot while serving a warrant to a Daniel Faust in Warwick Township. You can read the entire story via the Internet or Newspaper, but police then killed Faust after a shoot out in another township. This was the first shocking incident to jolt the drowsy town.

The second drama occurred this past Sunday, November 13th. David Ludwig, an 18-year-old Lititz resident, allegedly shot and killed his 14-year-old girlfriend Kara Borden’s parents whom also resided in Lititz. This one really shook things up.

Again, I am not going to speculate, pontificate or debate any of the details of this case due to the fact that I do not want to talk about something that I don’t know about. Read both of these stories, I’m sure you have already heard about them no matter where you live.

As a Lititz resident, we are used to hearing about the endless crimes that are committed in the city just minutes from us called Lancaster. How can this now be happening in Lititz? Things grow, and Lancaster too was once a small town. It now is becoming a thriving metropolis of fine restaurants, a multitude of jobs, scurrying people on busy city streets, and a life all of it’s own.

It’s amazing how personal it becomes when it’s right next to you. When you know people who know them. You can’t help but wonder if it could happen to you? Of course it could. There are no guarantees in this life that something devastating and shocking won’t happen to you or someone you love. When it is a willful act as terrifying as this, it seems so senseless. Isn’t murder always senseless though?

So this is when you start to think, my little town is not going to be so little anymore. I’ve been spoiled for quite some time. People are moving in, home developments are going up every day, and more dirty secrets are filling up the soil. You will have this. I don’t want it, but it’s there. Jealousy, greed, lust, envy, hate, anger and rage.

Is there a way to discontinue those human traits and only keep the good ones? Who gets to decide what the good traits are? And wouldn’t that make us clone like, or drone like? The problems we face today have been the problems of our ancestors, and their ancestors before them. They will never go away, they just take on different forms, different languages, and better communication equipment. We don’t get to live in a perfect world. A world without problems. What would we do with all the free time on our hands then?
