New Grandmother Feelings
By Kelly S. Croslis

A baby’s cry has the power to do that. It had been 16 years since I had heard the first cries of a newborn – now, here I was in a room with my daughter as she welcomed her first into this world and I became a grandma for the first time – my mom became a great-grandma, her sisters in turn became aunts, and her uncles became great uncles – and so the cycle continues.

I wasn’t sure how it would affect me when I saw the little face. Watching her in the bassinet, resisting the urge to try and curl her head full of black hair. Sitting in the chair holding her as she drank her first bottles it was like the years had never passed.

When I returned her to her bassinet and went home I could still feel her, the weight of her little body remained with me – imprinted not only on my arm, but in my heart and I had the greatest desire to hear her cry again.

What will the next year’s bring? We can not know for sure – but what I do know is it will be an adventure like no other.
