Mom's Are People too!

by Kelly Croslis

As moms we are pulled in many directions at once. Often times we look for a special place to call our own to remind us that we are still a person in our own right, that we are more than a wife and mother. A place to sit, relax, find the inner peace we sometimes lose throughout the day.

That little piece of heaven we look for can be found almost anywhere. For me it is a little corner of the Living Room. It may seem like an unusual place to find peace, but it offers me a comfortable place to relax, while being close to my husband and children. We all need a place where we can go to regroup. It doesn't matter if you have a corner of the bedroom, or a small desk in the laundry room, any space can be used as a place for us to be the woman we know we are inside.

I have claimed a chair and ottoman as mine. I covered the chair with my favorite pillows, some of which I made myself. Across the arm of the chair is thrown a dolphin blanket to keep me warm when I'm reading at night. Next to my chair is an Antique Secretary to hold the things that are important to me. As set of dolphin book ends hold my favorite books on the top shelf inside the cabinet. On the other two shelves, is a basket with computer disks, and a cup with scissors, tape, and other office supplies. A mug with my favorite NASCAR driver on it holds my favorite candies. On the window of the cabinet is a copy of the "Prayer of Jabez and a poem telling me not to quit. A large ottoman sits by my seat so I can put my feet up when I am relaxing. Another basket claims a spot on the ottoman, in it is my portable CD player, my headphones, extra batteries, and my CD's. On the floor sits a wicker basket that holds my magazines, books, stationary items, my Bible, and my day timer. Pictures of my girls and our family are on the wall next to me. From my chair I can look out the window into the front yard and daydream while I watch the birds in the trees.

When I sit in my little corner of the world, I can recharge my mind and soul, especially when life seems that it is crashing down and I feel overwhelmed. The things that surround me are pieces of my life that inspire me to be a better person for my family.

I describe my spot as an example of how peace can be found amidst chaos. Life pulls us in so many directions; I know there are days when sanity seems to be miles away. We deserve a place and the opportunity to feel alive again. Having a space filled with your favorite things can boost your spirit and recharge a ‘run down battery.' What greater gift can we give our kids, husband and family than a relaxed mom.
