Quick Tips to Get Your Patio Ready for Springtime Fun
By Jessica Ackerman
After spending the winter months indoors, spring is a great time to reacquaint oneself with the great outdoors. If you’re lucky enough to have an outdoor patio, porch or deck, now is the time to get it ready for warmer weather. Here are a few quick tips you can use to get these outdoor areas ship-shape, just in time for springtime fun.
Cleaning Up Winter’s Debris
During the autumn and winter seasons, there’s probably a good chance that your outdoor entertainment areas became cluttered with leaves, twigs and other debris. Before you can start to enjoy these areas again, you’ll want to clean up the mess. Start by raking up the bigger debris, then sweep up whatever remains. A power washer or even your garden hose with a spray attachment can then be used to finish your cleaning chores.
Assessing Your Maintenance Needs
Once you can clearly see the surface of your patio, porch or deck, it’s time to assess your maintenance needs. If you decide that your wood deck needs refinished or your concrete patio needs to be resealed, make a note to get these tasks done as soon as the weather permits.
If you have an outdoor grill, be sure to give it a good overall inspection. If your propane tank needs refilled, now is a great time to get that task taken care of. Make sure all hoses and connections are in good repair. You should also give your grill’s cooking surfaces a good cleaning if necessary.
Spring is a good time to inspect your patio furniture and other pieces of outdoor décor. If your furniture pieces are looking a bit worn, a new set of cushions or perhaps a fresh coat of stain or paint will freshen up their overall look.
Decorating for Spring
In most households, the outdoor patio season doesn’t really get in full swing until the hotter days of summer arrive. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t get a lot of enjoyment out of your porch, patio or deck during the springtime season as well. To get the season started off right, why not add a few spring-themed decorations to your outdoor recreational areas? A few pots of daffodils and tulips can add a springtime-fresh look. A sunny patio is also a great place to get a head start on growing your herbs, flowers and other garden plants. Although you’ll probably still need to bring them indoors during frosty nights, during the warm daytime hours a sunny patio or deck can be the perfect place for young plants.
During the cool springtime evenings, you might want a bit more warmth on your patio. Although cozy jackets and light blanket throws are handy, patio heaters can really transform chilly areas into toasty comfort. Whether you choose a portable electric patio heater or a rustic patio fire pit, you’ll love how they’ll warm up your outdoor space. By using patio heaters, you’ll be able to start enjoying your outdoor season earlier. Of course, you’ll also enjoy using your heaters when summer is over and the crisp days of autumn arrive.
