family reunion

Location, Location, Location

Choosing a location for your reunion can be a stressful when trying to figure out how you can be fair to the relatives in New Jersey and those in  Louisiana, and Michigan all at the same time.

Just try to select a location that will please the largest number of people, or, send out an e-mail survey with the locations you are considering. Then go with the majority choice.

Once you have picked a geographic area next find the perfect spot. A park, lakeside ore resort areas thst meet the interests of your family members who would be most likely to attend is best.

Here are some ways to make the reunion memorable:

Food as Far as the Eye Can See

A pot luck is great if possible so you can sample all the family favorite foods.  Or have eveybody chip in some money and cater the event. This works especially well if most family members are traveling long distances.

Fun foods like a sundae bar, barbecue or make you own pizza’s are large crowd pleasers. Be sure to ask as part of the RSVP is anyone has any food allergies or food restrictions.

  • If you are holding the reunion outside make sure you have aback up inside loaction.
  • Minimize family squabbles with ice breakers, games  and lots of space for folks to spread out and visit.
  • Set a budget and stick to it
  • Line up htoels and rental cars for family members traveling to the reunion

For many families, reunions do not happen very often. With busy work and school schedules, people living all over the country, and the expense of having a gathering, most families do not get together as often as they would like. When a reunion does happen, it is important to make it as memorable as possible. There are a few things that the reunion host can do to make sure that every member of the family has lots of fantastic memories of the event.

Bring along lots of photographs

Nothing gets discussion going like looking at old photographs. Sharing photos makes identifying people in the pictures so much easier, and creates lasting memories. This is a low cost activity that everybody is sure to cherish.

Games are always a great icebreaker

When people haven’t seen each other for a long time, shyness can be a problem. Also, for reunions that have many generations, it can be hard to find activities that can be enjoyed by all ages, from grandparents to grand kids. Board games give people a great excuse to talk to one another, and appeal to the competitive side of everyone.

Field trips can be fun for the whole family

Many family reunions suffer because people feel cooped up in a hotel or conference center. Getting out and exploring can add a spark to a reunion. Trips don’t have to be far. Just going to the nearest shopping mall or golf range can be a fun filled outing, and can prevent tensions from rising at the main reunion venue.

Please share your tips for a great reunion and what you would never do again!
