Make Festive St. Patrick’s Day Greeting Cards
It can be a lot of fun to make greeting cards for St. Patrick’s Day. Shamrocks, one of the predominant icons of St. Patrick’s Day, are actually quite easy to make using heart shapes. Even small children will be able to make beautifully decorated greeting cards to celebrate this “green” holiday. The following instructions can be used by either children or adults. Simply vary the decorating details, based on the age and skill level of the person crafting the card.
For each St. Patrick’s Day card you wish to make, you will need the following materials:
1 – Envelope (You could, of course, craft a handmade envelope. However, it can be much easier to make a card designed to fit a spare envelope you that already have. If you have a box of unused greeting cards, simply use one of the envelopes for your handcrafted St. Patrick’s Day card.)
1 – Piece of construction paper, scrapbook card stock, or other sturdy paper
Scraps of construction or scrapbook paper (use plenty of green shades)
Scissors (be sure to use safety scissors for small children)
Tacky craft glue
Markers, crayons, colored pencils, paints or other materials for drawing on the card
Embellishments as desired (glitter, stickers, paper flowers, etc.)
Rubber stamps and ink pad (optional)
Heart-shaped clip art, templates or stencils
Create the Card Base
Start by measuring the envelope you’ve chosen for your card, as these measurements will determine the finished size of the card you will make. Design your card so that it will have approximately a quarter inch of clearance on all sides when inserted into the envelope. This will give you an ample amount of space for decorating your card. Using a rule and a pencil, draw a rectangle on the paper or cardstock to match the desired measurements. If your card will fold in half, be sure to double the width or height of the card, depending on the direction your card will open. Cut out the rectangle with scissors. You could also use a paper trimmer for this step.
Create the Shamrocks
Although it might be difficult to draw a shamrock “freehand,” it can be easy when you use heart shapes. You’ll need three heart shapes for each shamrock you make. Simply print heart-shaped clip art onto paper, or trace heart shapes using a template or stencil. Cut out three matching hearts, overlap them, add a stem, glue together, and you’ll have a pretty shamrock to use on your card. Make as many shamrocks as needed, varying the size, color and paper pattern as desired.
Decorating the Card
Once you have a supply of shamrocks, you can decorate your St. Patrick’s Day card. Glue the shamrocks onto the front or inside of the card as desired. Embellish with glitter, stickers, markers, crayons or other materials. Add a sentiment to the card, using either rubber stamp letters and an ink pad, or colored pencils, markers or crayons. When you are finished decorating the card, you can sign it, put it in the envelope, seal it, and send it on its way to brighten somebody’s St. Patrick’s Day.
