How to Plan a Party Worthy of “Super Sweet Sixteen”
A sixteenth birthday is a momentous occasion for any teenager, and many choose to mark the occasion with a party. Roughly equivalent to a quinceañera, the Sweet Sixteen party has been made even more popular by an MTV show called My Super Sweet 16. Not everyone can afford the type of party featured on that show, but a 16th birthday party calls for a little more than the “same old thing’. Here are some ideas on planning the perfect night:
Stay on a Budget
It can be really easy to go overboard when planning a party, even if you don’t use professional event management services. Before you start, come up with a budget and promise yourself that you’ll stick to it. Bring your teen into the budgeting process; some would rather have a smaller party if they get to do a really expensive activity (like hiring a band). There are ways to keep costs low while still having a great time, send printed invitations instead of paying to have them done, cater the event yourself, make your own decorations, and shop for the lowest price on supplies like plates and cups.
Choose a Venue
If you wish, you can have a Sweet Sixteen at home; you don’t have to rent a hall or a country club. However, if you think your home won’t be able to hold an excited bunch of teenagers, you should consider holding the party somewhere else. Most higher-end restaurants have banquet rooms available, or you can hold the event at a place such as a miniature golf course, go kart track, or video arcade.
Pick a Theme
Although “Sweet Sixteen” is a theme in and of itself, choosing another theme can help to create long-lasting memories. Popular ideas include:
Once the theme is chosen, you’ll need to find ways to keep guests occupied. Any of the following are great ideas: hire a DJ or rent a karaoke setup, rent a photo booth, or just provide disposable cameras for teens to take candid shots. If your teen wants a smaller, more intimate party, host a dinner at a restaurant, consider allowing them to have a sleepover, or have a movie night where guests bring their favourite flicks.
Don’t forget to send your guests home with some party favours such as notepads, candy bars, key chains, and picture frames. No matter what budget, venue, theme and favours you choose, a little planning will ensure that your teen’s Sweet Sixteen party is one they won’t forget.
