Uglies by Scott Westerfeld:
Fifteen-year-old Tally lives in an abnormal society. On ones sixteenth birthday they receive an operation that transforms them from a regular person, or an “ugly”, into a drop-dead gorgeous person, or a “pretty”. Once someone “turns” he or she is introduced to a spectacular world of lavish mansions, wild parties, and beautiful people.
Like many kids, Tally cannot wait for her turn to live in such a carefree and attractive place. Since she is the youngest of her friends, she is left alone in her seemingly boring world, anxiously anticipating her upcoming birthday. But soon she meets Shay, who has her own ideas on becoming a Pretty.
Shay decides to run away to the Smoke, a place where rebellious people opposed to the operation go. Tally decides to stay and become pretty; that is all she ever wanted in life. But on the day of her operation, she is questioned about the disappearance of her friend, and is not allowed the transformation until she comes clean.
After ratting Shay out, Tally is sent as an undercover spy to the Smoke. But once Tally gets there, she learns many secrets about the operation- some that many change her idealistic attitude forever.
