Christmas is here! And it is the time to celebrate and to give. Christmas is marked by many festive activities. One of the special activities is the Christmas meal which often varies from country to country. As Christmas is approaching celebrate with meals and stories from around the world.
What do people eat on Christmas in Eastern Europe?
In countries of Eastern Europe: Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania, and Czech Republic people usually fast before Christmas. They end their fast on the Christmas Eve with twelve meatless dishes. On Christmas day they have a traditional meal of fried carp and potato salad. In addition to this, they eat pickled herring, cabbage rolls, sweet grain bread with nuts and poppy seed cake or rolls.
Christmas Dinner in New Zealand
Traditional dishes include shortbread and strawberries, fruit pies and assorted nuts. The major item for the main day is rolled lamb with mushroom stuffing and spinach mint puree. Desserts include Chocolate fondue and eggnog.
Special Christmas Dinner in France
A “reveillon” is special long dinner in France on Christmas Eve. Reveillon means waking and the dinner is named so because the participants have to stay awake till midnight and beyond. The dishes include goose liver or turkey with cashew nuts as topping. A traditional Christmas cake known as La Buche de Noel is served. It is a log-shaped sponge cake surrounded by white chocolate and cherries. Champagne is often served.
Christmas in Canada
Eggnogg is common during the holiday season in Canada. The Christmas dinner traditions of Canada are similar to the USA featuring with turkey, mashed potatoes”, cranberry sauce, and vegetables and desserts.
Finland’s Christmas Specialities
Joulupöytä in Finland is celebrated with a Christmas ham served with mustard or a special fish filet.
What people eat in Denmark on Christmas?
The Christmas dinner in Denmark is marked by roasted pork or goose served with roasted cashew nuts with salt and butter. A traditional dark gravy called brun sovs consisting of red cabbage and potatoes is served with roasted pork. Rice pudding is commonly presented as a dessert.
Christmas Dinner in the Netherlands
In the Netherlands, guests cook for themselves foundue style. The host provides vegetables, meat and all kind of salads and sauces. People here also enjoy traditional dinner having roasted beef or glazed ham. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are served with dinner.
