Reviews of Children’s Books

Perfect Gifts for Young Readers This Holiday Season!

If you have an young reader in your family, it can be challenging to find the right books that will help your child develop reading skills, confidence, and maintain his or her interest. Many publishers offer staged selections often labeled with headings such as “I Can Read” or “Step into Reading.” Since each publisher has its own guidelines for each level, be sure to look carefully at a book before you or your child makes a selection. It is important that emerging readers are not frustrated. Here is a sample of some of the terrific, enjoyable books that will help develop reading skills.

TAE KWON DO! by Terry Pierce, illustrated by Todd Bonita. This little book packs a big punch! Two and three word sentences in engaging rhyme will encourage the newest readers to turn the pages. The delightful illustrations show boys and girls actively engaged in “Tae Kwon Do!” The combination of pictures and words gives readers a realistic view of a Tae Kwon Do class. With an opening like “We dress. We go …to Tae Kwon Do,” you can’t miss! (Preschool- Kindergarten)

ALL TUTUS SHOULD BE PINK by Sheri Brownrigg, illustrated by Meredith Johnson. Every little ballerina will love this fun-filled book by about two little girls and their escapades in their dearly loved pink tutus. Readers follow the best friends to the store, the movies, the beach, and of course, to dance class! This one is a real charmer. (Kindergarten- Grade 2)

DANNY AND THE DINOSAUR by Syd Hoff.

Danny and his friend the dinosaur have been entertaining kids for years. Their antics will put on smile on the faces of even the most reluctant readers. Fun-filled and funny, this timeless story will be a favorite for boys and girls. (Ages 4-8)
