Back to School Organization Tips
by Jillian Bietz

Let's face it - eventually, summer must come to an end and a new school year has to start. It can be hectic. Finding old friends, new classes, and getting used to your school schedule are only a few of the things you have to deal with on those fateful first days. Yet as soon as the back-to-school mishaps calm down, you often find yourself in a fury of chaos that can last the whole year! If you aren't organized things can start to get a little crazy! But with this list of important organization tips, all you have to deal with is homework. Everything from your lunch money to your notebooks will be in the right place. These ideas will keep you in tiptop shape from September to June!

Back-to-School Shopping:

Back to school shopping is one of the greatest things about going back to school. But when everyone else is doing the same, it can be hard to find the right sizes and your favorite styles at the most popular stores. Try shopping on the weekdays at odd hours. The stores won't be as crowded as they are on the weekend or at lunch hour. Start at the back of the store, and work your way forward (the great priced items are often hidden in the back). Another great idea is to online shop! It takes half the time, and you can be guaranteed to find everything you are looking for.

Tip: If you fall in love with something at a store but it is just too expensive, ask a sales associate when the item will be going on sale. If the price is not going to be reduced soon, think about how often you would wear it. If it's something that doesn't work for everyday, you can eliminate it from your memory! But if you think it's going to be a great basic piece, consider splurging. If you're going to wear something often, it pays to buy good quality.

Do Homework as Early as Possible:

Don't leave homework for the last minute! Instead of watching the same episode of Project Runway for the third time in a row, start cracking the books! If you have a vocabulary test the next week, start making flashcards! Even if it seems too early, you will be ready for whatever comes along! Being unprepared is the worst, and you will be thanking yourself when you get that extra half hour to sleep in the morning! Your teachers will be proud, and you will be on top of your game.

Packing the night before:

School mornings can be really rough! If you find yourself scrambling to find your overdue homework, packing a brown bag lunch between bites of cereal and school starts in three minutes - you need a new plan. Easy enough, do all the packing the night before. That way, you will be prepared for everything and your much-needed things won't be floating around the whole house! Pick out your outfit the night before and neatly lay it out. If it's super wrinkly, you have time to iron it, and if your sock has a hole in it, you can pick a new pair. After dinner when everything is quieting down, pack your lunch. Before your little brother has time to snag the leftover lasagna from the night before, you will get first dibs on all the choices in the fridge! When Friday rolls around, consider buying lunch -a week of PB&J sandwiches can get tiresome after a few days, but the time Monday comes along, you will be craving your beloved sandwich! Tip: It's also a good idea to put your school bag at the front door to avoid last minute panic when it's time to leave.

Labeling:

From school sweatshirts (which almost every kid on campus owns) to pencil cases, labeling is key to organization! Tag your most important stuff (clothes, book bag, etc.) with your name, address and number and smaller items with your name. Although it sounds very elementary school, seeing some random kid using your favorite pen can be slightly awkward!

Emergency Snacks:

If you often hit a mid morning slump, or have practice immediately after school, pack some emergency snacks. For a fun spin on things, take turns bringing snacks with one or two friends. Trail mix, juice boxes, crackers, pretzels or fruit are great choices. Not only will you save money at the vending machines, sharing snacks is a great conversation starter when you want to branch out and meet some new people.

Hi..Like all of the other comments, I am going into 8th grade. I don't know why, but I am so scared! Probably because I am really over weight, everyone at my school are rude, and because I hate Social Studies, Science, and English. I only like Math. Plus I won't know any of my teachers because they are clearly new. I want to impress my teachers and the other students that I can get all A's if I tried and I can be "cool" too. Any tips for people liking me?

Hi, I'm Shelby and last year as a seventh grader I didn't try my best until the very end which means that I didn't exactly get time to improve my grades, so this year I am going to start off to a good start with good studies, no trouble, and A's on homework. But have any tips on how to stay organized when there is so much going on around me?>-(

Reading Books
I'm a sop!@#$%re in High School and I found that reading fictional books about girls helps a lot, on how they transition through the book.
#14 - Hallie - 01/05/2009 - 12:37
For it !@#$%s
Hey one thing that helps alot is to get your dad older bro or sis and mom to help you with the Hw if you don't get it. My dad is like a mathmatition and i dont get math at all so i have him try to help me, also don't do anything unless your Hw is done but dont rush through it get a snack watch like 10 mins of t.v and go work on it. I swear it helps. And take small breaks now and then.

something different
Hey, I'm Olivia. I'm going into 7th grade so not too big of a change but the advice is the same as everyone elses. It\\\'s basiclly the same things you see from other websites!
#11 - Olivia - 08/20/2008 - 23:57
Balance
This is really cool...I also think it'd be a good idea to help people be organized . But, balance is a really important thing because you can't just be working on schoolwork when chores and activities are important as well...making lists of priorities always help and focus on what you're doing in school rather than how good the cheeseburger you had for lunch yesterday. Just make it longer with more tips!!!!!!Thaanx peace oout!!!:)
#10 - Shayla - 08/09/2008 - 14:42
uuh.. school
So amazingly bad last year..... i was super unorganized and having papers fly everywhere, teachers were mad at me, aghhh, aghherama. mucho bad. (translation: really bad) I need to know how to stay on task this year and keep on deadlines. (i really hate deadlines) Any advice for an 8th grader in middle school?
#9 - salesha deeddowm - 08/04/2008 - 19:06
help
I find that your tips have a few cracks in them. Instead of just stating how you can be organized in school you should discuss being organized every where, like your room. Just a few things to help everyone stay on track. I'm going to be in the 9th grade and I find it best when you have a whole section just for your school stuff. Plus, you can be a little more liniant with homework. I find I do better when I do one assignment than take a short break, that way you don't get bored and you can still watch all your favorite shows. Other than that I believe your advise is very well planned out and it will help a lot of people on their quests to becoming more organized, put together peoples.

Advice for All
Hi! Everyone who needs help with life, should get "The O'Rilley Factor" by Bill O'Rilley. It talks about everything from your personal life to your school life. My grandparents got it for me and I loved it! And most importantly remember thaat people are going to think what they want to but it doesn't matter what they think, what matters is what YOU think.
#7 - Brittney - 07/19/2008 - 20:55
.....Eh...?
That advice really helped for the first day but, I need more help on todays school issues, such as: Rejection, cliques, stereotypes, bullies? If I could get advice on that, it would really help. Most people (about 85%) at my school call me "emo" and reject me. I sit with the only REAL friends I have, so, when people are making fun of me and hurting me just because of how I dress or act, feels just...like racism but not with race. With stereotypes and cliques. So, if I could get advice on that, I would know how to try to avoid that next month in 8th grade. Thanks.

Any Advice?
Yeah, I have the same problems. My parents have quiet a few chores for me to do, I usually have a few hours of homework, and I work on weekends. Not to mention my parents insist that I be in bed by 10pm, meaning I can\'t cram. Since I\'m busy everyday of the week I really don\'t have time to have time with my friends. I go to a performing arts school and I\'ll be taking theater meaning after school rehersals, which will be fun if I am close with anyone there. I\'m 16years old and will be a Junior, I want to enjoy it. I\'m also starting to FREAK OUT because in a about 2 years I\'ll be in college. Can you lend some advice? That will be Brilliant!!!
